DRONES FROM BAG: HOW SORTING AIDS THE FRONTLINE
Problem
During the full-scale war, society’s focus shifted: environmental issues, which were relevant yesterday faded somewhat into the background. All efforts were directed towards defense, volunteering, and survival.
For IDS Ukraine, the Morshynska producer, this meant the risk of reduced attention to the long-standing Green Bag Eco-Project. The program, which taught Ukrainians to sort plastic, seemed less relevant in the new reality. It became difficult for people to find the motivation to sort when there was air raid alerts, evacuation, and the front line nearby.
At the same time, defence units faced another problem – a shortage of replacement plastic parts for training drones. Drones constantly break down at training grounds where operators practice, and waiting for repairs means losing time and efficiency.
Thus, two crises collided, namely the environmental and the defensive. It was their intersection that gave rise to a new idea: to ensure that every plastic bottle collected by Green Bag could help the Defense Forces.
SOLUTION
To give the Green Bag a new purpose, IDS Ukraine gathered partners who had never worked together before: volunteers, 3D printers, engineers, and common Ukrainians. This led to the creation of the Green Bag – Sort for Drones! Project, which turned ecology into a tool of defense.
Now, collected plastic bottles are not just sent for recycling – they were used as raw materials for 3D printing parts for drones used in training UAV operators.
Ecology + technology + volunteering = partnership towards victory.
The Project operates on three levels:
- Business. IDS Ukraine provided logistics, the MyWaterShop platform, and ongoing communication support.
- Tech community. Engineers and workshops adapted PET plastic for filament and launched the production of drone parts.
- Citizens. Thousands of people across the country joined to collect plastic, becoming part of a combined link in the defense chain.
This is not just a one-time CSR campaign, but a real partnership ecosystem, where everyone does their part: business creates infrastructure, technology provides solutions, and society provides resources and engagement.
RESULT
The Green Bag – Sort for Drones! Project is an example of how the joint action of different parties can create a new social model, with business, the community, and the tech community acting united.
The collected plastic has been turned into dozens of batches of parts for training drones, which are delivered to training grounds every month. This partnership has allowed training centres to avoid downtime and enabled cadets to train more effectively for combat missions.
The number of program participants has tripled, and Green Bag has become not only an eco-initiative but also a symbol of social synergy during wartime.
IDS Ukraine has strengthened its reputation as a company that not only does business but also brings communities together to act, showing that even very different forces can change the country when they partner up.
