Veterans Support by Sigma Software

With the start of the full-scale invasion, dozens of Sigma Software specialists joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine. For the company, this became a major challenge: it was necessary to support mobilized employees, assist their families, and prepare conditions for the safe reintegration of veterans returning to work after demobilization.
To address this, Sigma Software built a comprehensive internal program that covers financial, educational, rehabilitation, and psychological support.

In 2022, Sigma Software established Sigma Software Unity Fund – a corporate charitable foundation that, since the first days of the full-scale war, has been providing systematic support to mobilized employees, veterans, military units, and civilians.
The Fund provides assistance through direct procurement: equipment, drones, vehicles, charging stations, communication devices, and rehabilitation tools. Since its creation, Unity Fund has allocated over USD 5 million to support the Armed Forces and Ukrainian citizens and continues to direct about UAH 2 million monthly to meet the needs of the military, including company employees.

Around the Fund, a strong community of veterans and volunteers has formed – people who continue to help their brothers-in-arms after demobilization. For many, this ongoing engagement becomes an important part of moral recovery and a smooth return to civilian life.

At different stages, several units and elements of the company’s ecosystem are involved in the program – including the HR Excellence Center, Sigma Software University, Sigma Software Labs, company managers, recruiters, and mentors.

Main Areas of the Veteran Support Program

  1. Support During Military Service

All employees who joined the Armed Forces are guaranteed reinstatement to their positions after demobilization. The company provides financial assistance as well as regularly purchases and delivers technical equipment, computers, drones, vehicles, charging stations, and other necessary supplies to the units where its mobilized employees serve.
Sigma Software also assists with rehabilitation, treatment, and support for families while implementing reintegration programs. Each month, Sigma Software Unity Fund allocates about UAH 2 million for military needs – supporting not only its own employees but also many other brigades on the front line.

In 2024, the company organized a large-scale fundraiser to supply medical and rehabilitation equipment for the Unbroken Center and the Kharkiv Spinal Center, where wounded soldiers and veterans undergo rehabilitation. These initiatives are part of a broader vision – to contribute to a nationwide system of care and recovery for Ukrainian defenders.

  1. Reintegration After Demobilization

When returning to work, veterans receive a personalized reintegration plan that includes the option to resume their previous role or retrain for a new one.

The company offers educational programs tailored to individual needs. Depending on skill gaps or career goals, veterans receive customized learning recommendations implemented through Sigma Software University, often with the support of internal mentors.

At a broader level, Sigma Software University also delivers external educational initiatives for veterans, such as the “Knowledge is Armor” program – designed to help military personnel build career plans in IT after completing their service.

Veterans who wish to change their profession or direction within the company can undergo retraining based on the specifics of their new role. The company supports a practical approach: re-engagement in work as soon as possible. Typically, this involves 2–3 weeks of tailored training, after which veterans gradually transition to project tasks.

As part of the veteran support framework, the HR department and Sigma Software University created a dedicated information hub on the company’s internal portal. It includes guidance for teams preparing for the return of mobilized colleagues – covering sensitive topics, potential triggers, and communication best practices.
These materials are available to all employees, including C-level managers. When a specific specialist is set to return, the HR team launches a mandatory training module for their line manager, department head, and immediate teammates. This ensures a personalized approach to each situation and a comfortable, respectful reintegration process.

  1. DefenseTech Ecosystem Development

Beyond education and workplace reintegration, Sigma Software empowers veterans to take an active role in shaping Ukraine’s  DefenseTech ecosystem. Through Sigma Software Labs and Defence Builder – the first Ukrainian accelerator for defense startups co-founded by the company – veterans can develop and scale tech solutions that have been tested on the battlefield. These initiatives provide access to mentorship, technical expertise, funding opportunities, and partnerships with engineers and investors who share the goal of strengthening Ukraine’s technological resilience.

Veterans are also encouraged to join the ecosystem as experts, mentors, and innovators – sharing their firsthand experience to improve the efficiency, safety, and usability of defense technologies.

  1. Psychological and Physical Rehabilitation

Sigma Software compensates the cost of psychological consultations and therapy sessions for veterans. Physical rehabilitation is covered under the company’s health insurance plan. In addition, veterans receive informational support, access to verified professionals, and recovery recommendations.

Beyond individual assistance, the company contributes to rehabilitation efforts on a national scale – organizing fundraisers and providing equipment for the Unbroken Center and supporting the Kharkiv Spinal Center, both of which serve wounded soldiers and veterans. This approach reflects a broader goal: to help create sustainable rehabilitation infrastructure across Ukraine.

Most Sigma Software specialists currently work remotely, which removes accessibility barriers and ensures comfortable working conditions for employees with disabilities or special needs. Major offices in Kyiv, Lviv, and Kharkiv are fully equipped for accessibility. The company follows the principle of inclusivity, offering flexible formats of work and support tools for all specialists.

  1. Support for Families of Mobilized Employees and Veterans

Sigma Software provides regular financial support to the families of mobilized employees and veterans, offers immediate assistance in cases of crisis or hardship.
Children of defenders are invited to participate in all internal company initiatives – from educational and creative workshops to entertainment events.
Spouses of mobilized employees have the opportunity to receive free education at Sigma Software University, allowing them to retrain for new professions and start careers in IT.

Supporting families is one of the key components of Sigma Software’s veteran policy. A volunteer community within the company also enables any employee – including veterans – to initiate charitable campaigns in support of the Armed Forces or families of fellow defenders. As of 2025, 52 Sigma Software employees serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Two have already completed their service and returned to work, and several more are preparing to return. Each receives comprehensive support through personalized reintegration plans that include learning, mentoring, and psychological assistance.

Thanks to this well-structured system, Sigma Software ensures continuity across all stages – from frontline support to full workplace reintegration. The families of defenders remain active members of the corporate community, fostering a strong sense of unity and care.

The program has become an essential part of the company’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) strategy and a model of how socially responsible business practices can make tangible impact.
For its efforts, Sigma Software was recognized by Forbes Ukraine among the Top 30 Employers for Veterans 2025 and acknowledged by HR Brand Ukraine in the Diversity & Inclusion category.
